The Sample Lesson C Minor Pentatonic Scales

Topic-Scales

Scales are the musical alphabet essential in learning jazz. I know some incredible musicians who are exceptions, who learned (took off) and transcribed many jazz solos, jazz tunes by ear. They know a lot of licks and phrases. They have it all impeccably well practiced. These musicians are rare exceptions.

Think of scales as the alphabet for jazz like the alphabet is for English, French etc. Remember that jazz is a language you learn by listening, transcribing solos, playing with other people, and memorizing tunes. It’s the same with languages that you speak. We use the same alphabet that's used in French and Italian, but it doesn’t mean we can speak those languages.

The Minor Pentatonic Scale

Minor Pentatonics and How It Relates To The Blues Scale For Guitar  Sheet Music Sample (PDF)

TO BE USED WITH AUDIO ABOVE AND THE VIDEO LESSON BELOW. PLEASE USE SIDE BY SIDE SWITCHING BETWEEN TABS ON YOUR BROWSER!

Lesson

  • Learn these 5 fingerings, one at a time, up the neck.
  • Remember and picture the patterns. You must know where the root is because that’s your key or starting note. You must learn how to play this up and down the neck, between any fingering, without getting lost. Then, you must eventually transpose this to every key.
  • On the recording and music I start from the lowest note of the position of each fingering. Every minor key has a relative major. You can play this lesson in the key Eb major as well.
  • You must start the scale on Eb.

• Sheet Music (often with TABS but not always) as a PDF file with a Audio MP3

 • Video Lesson with no sheet music, just to show a concept or how to practice something which can be easier to see on video.

SOMETIMES TABS ARE OMITTED BECAUSE THIS WEBSITE HAS A STRONG EMPHASIS ON LEARNING HOW TO READ MUSIC WHICH IS ESSENTIAL!
